What is WAP [April 2, 2002]

WAP stands for Wireless application protocol. For consumers, it simply means simple mobile internet, with monochrome display on handsets. Not to mention the extremely small size of the display too.

WAP has evolved since it was introduced few years ago, now the WAP technology also includes pictures, and push technology. Push technology means that users need not to do an active request for a service or information from the Net, now service providers may broadcast messages directly to their consumers handsets. This feature is useful for applications such as messaging, important news or message broadcast, etc.

There are plenty of applications available nowadays, from simple games to serious computer network administration tool. One such useful application is a mobile digital map, e.g. PetaWAP (written by Christ B. and Choky) which actually gives users the map of Bandung city Indonesia and its driving directions.
